We’ve learned to trust our mind, our logic, our ability to analyze situations. But our body holds a memory that is far more faithful — and far more honest.

In her book The Body Never Lies, Alice Miller highlights a powerful truth: our pain, our tension, and even our illnesses often reflect unresolved emotional wounds. What we consciously repress, the body expresses in its own way. What if we stopped trying to silence these signals — and learned to truly listen?

When the Body Speaks for Us

A nagging backache, chronic migraines, unexplained fatigue… These symptoms aren’t always purely physiological. Often, they’re the body’s language — its way of alerting us to an inner conflict, a buried emotion, or a long-unacknowledged wound.

Alice Miller explains how childhood trauma — even unconscious — can later manifest as chronic pain or illness in adulthood. When a child experiences emotional distress but is unable or not allowed to express it, the body often becomes the storage space for that suffering. They grow up carrying muscular tension, digestive issues, or even autoimmune conditions without knowing why.

Repressed Emotions Are Stored in the Body

In today’s society, we’re often encouraged to “rise above” our emotions — to stay strong and not let our feelings take over. But denying emotions doesn’t make them disappear. Instead, they take root in our cells, our muscles, our nervous system.

Take stress, for example. Occasional stress is normal, and the body can manage it. But when stress becomes chronic, it continuously activates the nervous system, releasing cortisol and causing inflammation. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, joint pain, or digestive disorders.

Similarly, repressed anger may show up as muscle tension or stomach aches, while unexpressed sadness might turn into persistent fatigue, chest tightness, or even deep melancholy.

How to Decode the Body’s Messages

Rather than viewing symptoms as enemies to be battled, what if we saw them as messengers — trying to get our attention?

Practices like kinesiology, paired with deep listening, can help access these emotional and physical memories and bring their meaning to light.

In session, I guide clients to listen to their bodies differently by:

  • Identifying the emotions linked to their physical pain or tension

  • Uncovering past experiences that may have triggered these blockages

  • Gently and respectfully releasing what’s been held for too long

Sometimes, a single realization is all it takes — recognizing a repressed emotion, naming an inner pain, or seeing a repeated pattern. That alone can spark a process of healing.

A Few Questions to Start Listening

If you’re experiencing chronic pain or a vague sense of unease, take a moment to reflect:

✔️ What am I experiencing emotionally right now?
✔️ Have I recently suppressed a feeling or an emotional reaction?
✔️ When did this pain begin? Was there a significant event just before it started?
✔️ What deeper need might this symptom be trying to express?

Healing Begins When We Listen

When we start listening to our body with kindness — rather than silencing it with medication or emotional numbing — we offer it the space it needs to speak. This is the beginning of reconciliation with oneself. It’s a path of true healing — one that goes far beyond symptom relief.

In session, I gently guide you through this process of inner listening, helping you release what’s asking to be heard.

Your body doesn’t lie — it speaks. Are you ready to listen?
